A Thanksgiving Look At Great Meals In Star Trek History

November 26, 2008 Posted online: http://trekmovie.com/2008/11/26/a-thanksgiving-look-at-great-meals-in- star-trek-history

thanks klingons

Klingons come to dinner (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

Perhaps no other meal time scene in Star Trek has the symbolism and meaning than when Kirk and the crew have the Klingons over for dinner on the Enterprise. The meal itself was impressive from its variety of foods from both cultures, but it was the conversations that were the most delicious. The themes discussed during the dinner scene echo through the entire film and is an important setting for the movie. The scene beautifully illustrates the differences, yet also the commonalities, of the Klingon Empire and the Federation. From a character point of view, Captain Kirk and Chang get into a verbal confrontation (with Kirk delivering his debate-winning line of “Earth.   Hitler. 1938.”) Meanwhile, Spock and Gorkon try to salvage the dinner with diplomacy. The table itself is colorful with blue fish and bright flowers. Although it was on a starship and full of exotic foods and aliens, anyone with large extended family gathering for a meal can relate to some of the tensions at Kirk’s table – Credit: Trekmovie.com

Remember, or imagine, being a kid in the 1960s, sitting in front of the TV set. With great excitement and anticipation, you are watching the opening monuments of a brand new type of TV program. There is a starship on the screen. It’s huge, 7 football fields long and 23 stories tall. It has artificial gravity inside and can travel at speeds faster than light. The vessel and crew go from one star system to the next, as easily as people can travel from one town to the other.
 2011-12-24_Trekmas
And as you are soaking all of this up, in the voice of the ship’s captain, you hear the almost magical words of what can be called “The Stellar Great Commission”: “Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.”

USS Valkyrie Chaplain Newsfeed

Earth-date June 2017 By Lieutenant Gerald Box

Greetings Fellow Star Trek Fans

My name is Gerald Box.  One day I wore a Star Trek shirt to work. Several people saw it and would stop and engage me in a short conversation about Star Trek. Apparently, it seemed I knew a lot about all the TV series and movies. One of the youngest co-workers said to me, “You must have watched lots of Star Trek reruns when you were a kid.” I replied, “No not reruns, I watched the original broadcasts!” I have been watching Star Trek since 1966. Today my Star Trek collection includes books, DVD movies, VHS TV episodes, posters, View Master reels, records, cassette tapes, trading cards, games, action figures, Pez figures, model ships, cups, mugs, paintings, clocks, shirts, blue prints, manuals, magazines, comic books, watches, stamps, games plus a few other things including a William Shatner (Captain Kirk) autograph.

I am a Chaplain in STARFLEET International and I’ve been a member since 2015. I live with my wife Bernadette (along with 2 dogs and 1 cat) in Louisville, Kentucky. I am glad to be part of the USS Valkyrie Correspondence Chapter in Region 4.  At my home church (a Christian Church – Disciples of Christ congregation); I serve as an ordained deacon. I preach sermons monthly at a local state prison chapel ministry, I officiate the devotional message at the Lord’s Table, I read scripture as sermon lector, I teach an adult Bible class and I serve as the Men’s Group discussion leader.

My email is listed below, and I welcome prayer concerns, spiritual questions, and your comments about people of faith from any of the Star Trek TV series or movies. One of the basic points in the STARFLEET chaplain program is the concept of Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations (IDIC). I have had life experiences with several aspects of faith in our own culture such as Baptist, Lutheran, Pentecostal, Catholic, Church of Christ, and Disciples of Christ. In addition, I have knowledge of Islam and Judaism. I also respect those people that do not practice any faith.

My role in the USS Valkyrie Chapter is to fulfill the duties of a STARFLEET chaplain as described below from the STARFLEET Chaplain Services website.

STARFLEET Chaplain Services is designed as an outreach to the spiritual and moral needs of Fleet members in order to express an avenue of love and hope to those who may require assistance in those areas and will be made available at the discretion of the Chaplain Services team in order to provide said assistance throughout all regions within STARFLEET, The International Star Trek Fan Association. The current leadership is directed by Rev. Admiral Russell D. Ruhland, Chief Chaplain, STARFLEET and the Region 4 leader is Chaplain Stephen Griswold, Chaplain Services Liaison.  Serving chaplains complete a STARFLEET Academy certification course.

 Region Recruitment: Enough is Enough?

2e1b7c9309585c669529099638ba7f86

2016.07.07.13:10 by CAPT Jeffrey Redmond USS Valkyrie NCC-2590

Of the many regions throughout the Starfleet International organization, Region One is doing quite well. In fact, it’s doing better than all the other regions. There’s more than a thousand SFI dues paid members, with many more interested people on the Region 1 Facebook page. So, life is good . . . or good enough.

However, we can’t get lazy, and expect everything to continue along on its own inertia. Quite a few chapters have ended by complacency, and allowing interest to disappear. It’s always good to let others know about STARFLEET and R 1, especially all who are Star Trek fans. Everyone knows someone who’s a Trekker, or Trekkie, or both (if that’s possible).

There are more than a few who want to get involved with Star Trek and science fiction, but don’t know how. They haven’t been invited, and would if they were. Many a chapter has the luxury of not really needing more members. Only a minimum of ten are required to stay commissioned. So there doesn’t have to always be nasty pressures to recruit and force others to join.

Region One has 53 both meeting and correspondence chapters. It’s well located among (alphabetically) Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Communication is done by e-mails, postal mail, telephone calls, personal visits, Facebook posts, and perhaps even by psychic mind melds. Well, I don’t have any psychic powers myself, but some of your others probably do.

Science Fiction used to have far more males than females involved. Fortunately, this has now changed to a more equal ratio, with STARFLEET memberships reflecting increases of girls and women joining. Some younger females will leave when they get married and have children, but they can (and will) be invited to return someday soon. Of course older people pass on to the next life, and we have to wait awhile for newborn babies to get a little bit older.

The region will continue to grow, slowly but surely, in the upcoming seasons and years. R 1 crews range in all ages from pre-teens to 90’s. There are a more equal number of male and female crew members, and this includes the officers who have passed both STARFLEET exams. Some currently inactive people will return when (and as) they can. New members will definitely be recruited and join.

The Database is an excellent way to sign up, and annual dues are still only $10. There are hundreds of interesting classes to take (for free!) at the Academy, and all kinds of fun activities to participate in. STARFLEET currently has almost 4,800 members, organized into 232 chapters, in its 20 regions, all over this world. There’s no need to assume that everyone is from Earth, as there is no need for any discrimination about planet of origin. Star Trek is for all worlds, and all futures. Gene Roddenberry is certainly proud.

Region Recruitment: Enough is Enough?

Region Recruitment: Enough is Enough?by CAPT Jeffery Redmond, USS Valkyrie

(This is the first version of Captain Jeff Redmond’s article rewritten  above that made Region 4’s editorial for their newsletter “Region 4 Subspace Communicator” as well as tweeted it http://sc.region4.org/2016/04/region-recruitment-enough-is-enough/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter  😉 Congratulation Jeff 🙂  )

Of the many regions throughout the Starfleet International organization, our Region Four is doing quite well. We have 455 SFI dues paid members, with many more interested people on the Region 4 Facebook page. So, life is good… or good enough.

However, we can’t get lazy, and expect everything to continue along on its own inertia. Quite a few chapters have ended by complacency, and allowing interest to disappear. It’s always good to let others know about STARFLEET and R4, especially all who are Star Trek fans.

So there doesn’t have to always be pressures to recruit and coax others to join.

Region Four has both meeting and correspondence chapters. We are scattered all over in California, Nevada, Texas, and Arizona. Nothing in Hawaii yet, but perhaps that’s a classified top secret. We communicate by e-mails, postal mail, telephone calls, personal visits, Facebook posts, and perhaps even by psychic mind melds. Well, I don’t have any psychic powers myself, but some of you others probably do.

Science Fiction used to have far more males than females involved. Fortunately this has now changed to a more equal ratio, with STARFLEET memberships reflecting increases of girls and women joining. Some younger females will leave when they get married and have children, but they can (and will) be invited to return someday soon. Of course older people pass on to the next life, and we have to wait awhile for newborn babies to get a little bit older.

Our region will continue to grow, slowly but surely, in the upcoming seasons and years. The R4 crews range in all ages from pre-teens to 90’s. There are a more equal number of male and female crew members, and this includes the officers who have passed both STARFLEET exams. Some currently inactive people will return when (and as) they can. New members will be recruited and join.

The Database is an excellent way to sign up, and annual dues are still only $10. There are hundreds of interesting classes to take (for free!) at the Academy, and all kinds of fun activities to participate in. STARFLEET currently has more than 4,600 members, organized into 236 chapters, in its 18 regions, all over this world. There’s no need to assume that everyone is from Earth, as there is no need for any discrimination about planet of origin. Star Trek is for all worlds, and all futures. Gene Roddenberry is proud!

Well I realy don’t know what to say about life’s unfair twists except that maybe this new generation of Star Trek fans might know that they can do whatever they put their minds to.

 Starfleet is International!

2016.07.07.10:48  by CAPT Jeffrey Redmond USS Valkyrie NCC-2590

3cc46c34835edb43edefa42c4ab56710

STARFLEET has always been a world-wide organization. Its 4,600 members are in regions and chapters all over Planet Earth. True, many of them are in the U.S. But there’s quite a few in other countries, too. The official title is STARFLEET International, Inc. And International means throughout the world.

OK, maybe not in every single country. But on enough of the seven continents, such as (alphabetically) Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. There’s no known STARFLEET members on Antarctica, because penguins can’t be recruited. There’s also no chapters currently in Hawaii (R 4), though you may find a few individual AFI members at a luau or surfing contest.

This is an election year for STARFLEET, and all members can vote on who will be Fleet Commander (for the next three years) by November 15th. However, there seems to be a problem among a few people about who may be nominated for this position. One challenge has been that no one outside of the U.S.A. should be permitted to run. Why this is a false argument can immediately be made known.

STARFLEET is International. Anyone, anywhere, who is a dues paid member (in good standing) is eligible to run and vote. All he or she has to be is 25 years old (and bondable). This rule can be found in the STARFLEET Manual on page 16. Even Americans who have difficulties with foreigners in other lands need to understand this. Don’t be confused with the U.S. political elections on Tuesday November 8th, where only American citizens are eligible to run and vote.

If you don’t like a particular candidate for the Fleet Commander job, then don’t vote for him or her. Saying that someone is “foreign” or “not American”, and should be excluded, is ridiculous. This certainly goes against the bi-laws of our organization. STARFLEET has an anti-discrimination policy, and that this is always strictly enforced is both wise and wonderful.

Jim Lowell Takes Us to the Moon
Cmdr. Kathleen West
Chief Science Officer, U.S.S. Valkyrie

apollo13-patch

One of my favorite space flight movies of all time is Apollo 13, so naturally, any news item involving Capt. Jim Lovell, captured my attention.  Astronomy Editor David J. Eicher and Senior Editor Richard Talcott recently published an interview with the 87 year old former astronaut which covers his time on the infamous Apollo 13 as well as his other missions.  Scheduled to land on the moon, the Apollo 13 mission was aborted when an electrical short led to an oxygen leak that the team barely survived.index

From his earlier Apollo 8 mission, Lowell explained that the moon had three different shades: sunlight, earth-shine, and nighttime.  His description is detailed, ”In sunlight, it’s quite bright; in earth-shine, it looks like snow outside at nighttime here on Earth; and then there’s the part that has no earthshine, no sunshine — you don’t see a thing.” Of course, he goes on to explain that if you turn toward the sky, the brightness and vividness of the stars at night is like no other.  It might be something like comparing the nighttime sky in a city to that of the nighttime sky in the middle of the desert where there are no lights to pollute to view.

While Lowell didn’t take the memorable picture of the earth rising as the ship traveled around the moon, he recalls the moment it happened very clearly in his mind.  His colleague, Bill actually took the photo with his telephoto lens. This was only one of many photos taken during the flight.earthrise photo

As featured in the movie, Capt. Lowell kept his composure, even when he knew the crew was in trouble and their lives were at risk.  Eicher and Talcott asked how he kept such a clear head and Lowell responded, “Well, if you want to get in this business, you better be optimistic.”  He credits his experience as a test pilot prepared him for it as just a problem that needed to be solved.  His incredible heroism is recalled in this amazing first person recount at http://www.astronomy.com/bonus/lovell.

A LOOK AT THE MAN JOHN NASH AS A CHILD…

This year we lost so many people very dear to the Star Trek community in one month that it is hard to bring them all together in one newsletter.  Hopefully we will have some independent posts on our Memorial page.  We will also try to get post for those who have pasted on before the launching of the USS Valkyrie 😦

However when I found out that the USS Valkyrie’s Chaplin had a story to tell about John Nash I simply had to ask…

MASTER CHIEF PETTY OFFICER ALAINA DAMEWOOD
1202

When I think back on stories my aunt told me about John Nash . I am reminded of the first time Aunt Joe Strasko had to watch John while his mother was working at the J C Penny’s store in Bluefield WV. Back Then john’s mother was working two jobs and my aunt and her would switch shifts to cover to be able to watch the others children in between their shifts . John Nash came over to stay the night with my cousins John Strasko and his brother on a school night . The boys decided half way through the night they wanted to try to camp out side in the the middle of summer in my aunt’s back yard. But John Nash kept saying he did not want to go outside because of the factor he would rather stay inside and read on his books. Finally the boys decided to keep John Nash company but to their surprise John sat their reading his books instead of trying to play with the other children . Finally my cousin John Strasko realized if they started talking to john about the subjects he was interested in that they could convince him to go out side with them and look at the stars. John Nash sat on a blanket under the stars with the boys talking about the constellations with my cousins. The next morning when my aunt tried to get them up to get ready for school she discovered the boys had all fallen asleep outside on the blanket and So she went to get them up but John Nash was already up and getting his papers worked on before getting in my aunts car to go to school. That afternoon when John got home he told his mother about what a wonderful time he had discussing the constellations with my cousins. His mother seemed assumed that the boys found away to get john to open up and talk about his passions for science and from that day forward any time she had to go to work my aunt Joe Strasko watched John Nash so he could spend time with my cousins.

SFMC

(An introduction to STARFLEET MARINE CORP)

On the Flight Line

Greetings!

My name is Bill West, and I would like to introduce myself and the 66th Marine Strike Group, “The Fighting Fireflies”. I have been in Starfleet for the majority of years since 1994. I have served on the U.S.S. Peacekeeper in the Central Valley as the OIC of the Marine Strike Group before moving to command the U.S.S. Sierra and becoming the OIC of the 4th Brigade and becoming the creator of the Battle M.E.C.H.A. MOS for the SFMC. I currently hold the rank of Brigadier in the SFMC.flight-suit

After moving down to the Inland Empire, my wife and I served on the U.S.S. Centurion and the U.S.S. William O’Darby. Our Starfleet membership lapsed for a couple of years and we became members once again with the launch of the U.S.S. Ontario, under the command of Admiral David Ryan. After his passing, I assumed command of the Ontario, until it was decommissioned in 2014. At that time we returned to the O’Darby, until our family transferred to the Valkyrie.

The 66th Marine Strike Group was an aerospace fighter squadron under my command aboard the Ontario. With the blessing of the crew (hopefully as well as the command staff of which I haven’t been able to really discuss at this writing), I will be raising the proud standard of “The Fighting Fireflies” aboard the Valkyrie. Our motto is “Ego sum a folium in ventus” or “I’m a leaf on the wind”. Our unofficial motto is “You can’t take the sky from me.” Both active and reserve marines are welcome in the 66th. While passing the exams for the Aerospace MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) is preferred, it is not necessary. Aerospace exams run from the basic course AE-100 to the final course AE-301. Marine Aerospace pilots are awarded their wings and call sign with the successful completion of the AE-295 course. All courses and materials are free for SFMC members.66th MSG

I’m looking forward to getting to know all my new crew and to all the adventures we are going to have.

In Service to the Fleet,

Brigadier Bill D. West

Collecting Box Tops

wanted box tops

The 66th Marine Strike Group is collecting “Box Tops for Education”. We collect these throughout the year, and donate them to our local school several times thoughout the year. It’s a very simple community service project. Many of us buy products that have these box tops already, all it takes is to clip them off. One box top is work ten cents to a school. Alone it doesn’t sound like much, but when the community turns them in, they add up.

Please consider collecting these box tops, and you can send them to me or donate them to the local school of your choice.

Thanks!

BDR Bill “Browncoat” West.

Tribute to Leonard Nimoy

Spock,_2267 (1)  Being Trekkies, we knew him as the almost always logical half human, half Vulcan First Officer,  Lieutenant Commander Spock, whose comments could make some either groan or laugh, depending on the episode.  But Leonard Nimoy was more that just a actor.  He was a director, photographer, poet, singer and song writer.  His role as Spock is the one he will be remembered most for.

He was born on March 26, 1931 in Boston Massachusetts, to Dora and Max Nimoy.  The started acting at the tender of a eight in community theaters.  He didn’t make his Hollywood debut until age 20, doing bit parts in Queen for a day and Rhubarb, both in 1951.  After serving two years in the United States Army, he returned to doing small, often uncredited parts in various movies.  He played the part of Narab in Zombies of the Stratosphere, a role that would prove to be similar to his Star Trek role. Leonard_Nimoy_William_Shatner_Star_Trek_1968

In 1965, he played the character of Mr Spock in “The Cage” his character was suppose to be martian.  He wasn’t first officer in that one, although I do remember watching “The Cage” the way it was made and then part of “The Menagerie”.

He played Spock from 1966 to 1969 in the original show and also on the various movies   I will admit one of my favorites was the new Star Trek from 2009, where  Zachary Quinto played the Spock roll and had Spock there from another time

spock-y-spock

At the beginning of this tribute, I did mention that Leonard Nimoy was a photographer, something I actual hadn’t realized till after his passing.  What I was impressed with was The Full Body Product, showing women at all shapes and sizes.  Here’s the link to the site for his photoscolor_nimoy_headshot

http://www.rmichelson.com/Artist_Pages/Nimoy/pages/Leonard-Nimoy-Gallery.html

Well, you’ve made it to the end of my tribute.  I’m sure I could have gone into so much more about this amazing man but I do hope you enjoyed my tribute to Leonard Nimoy.
