VALKYRIE LOG SUMMER 2016

Region Recruitment: Enough is Enough?

2016.07.07.13:10 by CAPT Jeffrey Redmond USS Valkyrie NCC-2590
Of the many regions throughout the Starfleet International organization, Region One is doing quite well. In fact, it’s doing better than all the other regions. There’s more than a thousand SFI dues paid members, with many more interested people on the Region 1 Facebook page. So, life is good . . . or good enough.
However, we can’t get lazy, and expect everything to continue along on its own inertia. Quite a few chapters have ended by complacency, and allowing interest to disappear. It’s always good to let others know about STARFLEET and R 1, especially all who are Star Trek fans. Everyone knows someone who’s a Trekker, or Trekkie, or both (if that’s possible).
There are more than a few who want to get involved with Star Trek and science fiction, but don’t know how. They haven’t been invited, and would if they were. Many a chapter has the luxury of not really needing more members. Only a minimum of ten are required to stay commissioned. So there doesn’t have to always be nasty pressures to recruit and force others to join.
Region One has 53 both meeting and correspondence chapters. It’s well located among (alphabetically) Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Communication is done by e-mails, postal mail, telephone calls, personal visits, Facebook posts, and perhaps even by psychic mind melds. Well, I don’t have any psychic powers myself, but some of your others probably do.
Science Fiction used to have far more males than females involved. Fortunately, this has now changed to a more equal ratio, with STARFLEET memberships reflecting increases of girls and women joining. Some younger females will leave when they get married and have children, but they can (and will) be invited to return someday soon. Of course older people pass on to the next life, and we have to wait awhile for newborn babies to get a little bit older.
The region will continue to grow, slowly but surely, in the upcoming seasons and years. R 1 crews range in all ages from pre-teens to 90’s. There are a more equal number of male and female crew members, and this includes the officers who have passed both STARFLEET exams. Some currently inactive people will return when (and as) they can. New members will definitely be recruited and join.
The Database is an excellent way to sign up, and annual dues are still only $10. There are hundreds of interesting classes to take (for free!) at the Academy, and all kinds of fun activities to participate in. STARFLEET currently has almost 4,800 members, organized into 232 chapters, in its 20 regions, all over this world. There’s no need to assume that everyone is from Earth, as there is no need for any discrimination about planet of origin. Star Trek is for all worlds, and all futures. Gene Roddenberry is certainly proud.

Region Recruitment: Enough is Enough?

by CAPT Jeffery Redmond, USS Valkyrie
(This is the first version of Captain Jeff Redmond’s article rewritten above that made Region 4’s editorial for their newsletter “Region 4 Subspace Communicator” as well as tweeted it http://sc.region4.org/2016/04/region-recruitment-enough-is-enough/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter 😉 Congratulation Jeff 🙂 )
Of the many regions throughout the Starfleet International organization, our Region Four is doing quite well. We have 455 SFI dues paid members, with many more interested people on the Region 4 Facebook page. So, life is good… or good enough.
However, we can’t get lazy, and expect everything to continue along on its own inertia. Quite a few chapters have ended by complacency, and allowing interest to disappear. It’s always good to let others know about STARFLEET and R4, especially all who are Star Trek fans.
So there doesn’t have to always be pressures to recruit and coax others to join.
Region Four has both meeting and correspondence chapters. We are scattered all over in California, Nevada, Texas, and Arizona. Nothing in Hawaii yet, but perhaps that’s a classified top secret. We communicate by e-mails, postal mail, telephone calls, personal visits, Facebook posts, and perhaps even by psychic mind melds. Well, I don’t have any psychic powers myself, but some of you others probably do.
Science Fiction used to have far more males than females involved. Fortunately this has now changed to a more equal ratio, with STARFLEET memberships reflecting increases of girls and women joining. Some younger females will leave when they get married and have children, but they can (and will) be invited to return someday soon. The Database is an excellent way to sign up, and annual dues are still only $10. There are hundreds of interesting classes to take (for free!) at the Academy, and all kinds of fun activities to participate in. STARFLEET currently has more than 4,600 members, organized into 236 chapters, in its 18 regions, all over this world. There’s no need to assume that everyone is from Earth, as there is no need for any discrimination about planet of origin. Star Trek is for all worlds, and all futures. Gene Roddenberry is proud!

“I Can Do Zat!” Goodbye Anton Yelchin… Only the Good Die Young 😦

I thought I would easily write a nice memorial for Anton Yelchin… however I have found the task a bit more than I can quickly do.

There was always something fun for me with Chekov’s Character and my Dad’s Mother being Russian…

I have also enjoyed some of the fan art…

Well I realy don’t know what to say about life’s unfair twists except that maybe this new generation of Star Trek fans might know that they can do whatever they put their minds to.

Starfleet is International!
2016.07.07.10:48 by CAPT Jeffrey Redmond USS Valkyrie NCC-2590

STARFLEET has always been a world-wide organization. Its 4,600 members are in regions and chapters all over Planet Earth. True, many of them are in the U.S. But there’s quite a few in other countries, too. The official title is STARFLEET International, Inc. And International means throughout the world.
OK, maybe not in every single country. But on enough of the seven continents, such as (alphabetically) Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. There’s no known STARFLEET members on Antarctica, because penguins can’t be recruited. There’s also no chapters currently in Hawaii (R 4), though you may find a few individual AFI members at a luau or surfing contest.
This is an election year for STARFLEET, and all members can vote on who will be Fleet Commander (for the next three years) by November 15th. However, there seems to be a problem among a few people about who may be nominated for this position. One challenge has been that no one outside of the U.S.A. should be permitted to run. Why this is a false argument can immediately be made known.
STARFLEET is International. Anyone, anywhere, who is a dues paid member (in good standing) is eligible to run and vote. All he or she has to be is 25 years old (and bondable). This rule can be found in the STARFLEET Manual on page 16. Even Americans who have difficulties with foreigners in other lands need to understand this. Don’t be confused with the U.S. political elections on Tuesday November 8th, where only American citizens are eligible to run and vote.
If you don’t like a particular candidate for the Fleet Commander job, then don’t vote for him or her. Saying that someone is “foreign” or “not American”, and should be excluded, is ridiculous. This certainly goes against the bi-laws of our organization. STARFLEET has an anti-discrimination policy, and that this is always strictly enforced is both wise and wonderful.
